As a registered charity Walter Powell Pre-School had no funds to build a new classroom for their children. The preschool gathered a special project committee led by Patrick Neville to come up with a solution, raise the funds, navigate planning, building regulations, funding contracts and project manage the actual development itself. The results were outstanding. The entire project cost when fully budgeted was £52,000. However because the committee project managed themselves and coerced local trades and retailers into providing cheap or free labour and materials, the actual cost of the build was c. £37,000. The remaining money was raised through Council funding and fundraising events including an art auction.
Councillor Sturgis opened the new building at a ceremony on Saturday 7th December where he commented that “the record set in the delivery of this project was unlikely to ever by beaten in the County” adding that “it was the best development ever funded by the Early Years and Childcare Team in the County.”
